Backup generators should never be used indoors or outside near windows. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a common risk associated with using generators in areas that are not well ventilated. (Photo: iStock)

Power outages are common following a natural disaster, and generators are a good investment for those living and working in areas prone to these kinds of events.

However, while backup generators are incredibly useful, they do come with their own risks.

Generator risks include fire, damage to electrical equipment, injuries and death. It’s important to understand the risks related to generators and take the necessary precautions for safe operation.

The Tampa, Florida-based Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety offers the following tips for the safe operation of backup generators.

The IRS has released the final forms for the 2016 ACA Reporting.  Minor changes were made to the forms, including the addition of two new “Offer of Coverage” codes for use on Form 1095-C.  The instructions also included some clarifications to existing rules, including changes for certain transition relief provisions that are no longer available.

Unlike last year, unfortunately, the deadline for providing the forms to your employees and to the IRS has not been extended.

Reporting Requirement

Furnish a copy of Form 1095-C to full-time employees

Jan. 31 of the following year

File Forms 1094-C and 1095-C with the IRS

Feb. 28 of the following year

(March 31, if filed electronically)

Also, the requirement to make a “good faith gesture” no longer applies so the forms need to be accurate to avoid costly penalties under Code Section 6721 or 6722.

It’s getting late in the year so it is important to start collecting the data for your payroll company or other vendor who is preparing your forms.

If you need an alternative low-cost solution for completing the forms, please let me know.  Also, we can help you file an extension if you need more time submitting the forms to the IRS.
